What is Ketosis?
Under normal circumstances, glucose is used as the main source of energy, by our body’s cells. Glucose is primarily derived from carbohydrates in our diet. These foods may include sugar (source – milk, yogurt, fruits, etc.), starchy foods (source – pasta, bread, other refined flour products, etc.) Our body breaks the dietary carbohydrates into simple sugar. Glucose is used by the body to either fuel it or it is stored for later use in the muscles and liver as glycogen.
If there isn’t sufficient glucose available in order to meet the energy demands, then, as an alternative strategy to meet the needs, the body starts to break down the stored fat to supply glucose from the triglycerides. This process produces ketones as a by-product. Simply put, ketosis is a metabolic state wherein, our body converts the fat reserves into energy, and releases ketones in this process.
What is a Ketogenic Diet?
A ketogenic diet, also known as a keto diet, involves an intake of foods that are low in carbohydrates and are high in fat. This reduction of carbohydrates in the diet automatically puts the body in a metabolic state knows as ketosis. As ketosis occurs, the body becomes adept at burning fat as fuel for energy. A keto diet can cause a significant reduction in the insulin and blood sugar levels. Increased ketones, in the system, are associated with many health benefits. Though there are numerous versions of the keto diet, the most well researched as well as most recommended one is the Standard Ketogenic Diet (SKD) version.
What is Keto Coffee?
A few years ago, would you have imagined putting together coffee, oil, and butter? With the advent of the keto diet and especially the keto coffee, this has changed. Separately, these three ingredients don’t even complete a food group. However, together, this mix of coffee which you can freshly grind on a great coffee grinder, virgin coconut oil, and unsalted grass-fed butter has become the go-to beverage for those want to keep up their keto diet without cheating. Keto coffee also referred to as ‘Bulletproof Coffee’ acts as a breakfast substitute. Keto coffee is designed such keeping in mind low carbohydrates and high-fat ingredients to help you reach ketosis faster.
Benefits of Keto Coffee
Let’s discuss how making the switch to a keto coffee over your regular coffee can prove beneficial for you.
Aids in weight loss
With a keto coffee, more fat equals more fuel. As mentioned earlier, the ketogenic diet focuses on a low carbohydrate, moderate protein, and high-fat diet. This diet forces the body system to burn fat in place of glucose, for energy. With a limited amount of carbohydrates to source energy from, the body starts breaking down fat from the fat reserve as the liver produces ketones. Ketones are an organic compound which is used by the body as a backup source of fuel. While the body begins to progressively burn fat, it (the body) also loses weight.
Besides, coffee itself has been known to boost metabolism. When grass-fed butter and MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) oil are added to it, the fatty acids from these ingredients; don’t require the liver to process them before they enter the blood stream. Thus they are converted to ketones immediately and used to generate energy. Additionally, the grass-fed butter and MCT oil, being high in fat content, keep you feeling satiated for many hours and help prevent overeating and unnecessary snack binging all through the day.
That said, you should also bear in mind that only adding a keto coffee to your regular diet or a non-keto diet will not yield any results with regards to losing weight. Also, the grass-fed butter and oil will just add additional saturated fat to your regular diet and add to the already existing weight rather than putting the body in ketosis. Fat rich keto coffee, when consumed in tandem with a properly charted keto diet, will help you reach ketosis effectively.
Helps in Managing Epilepsy
Though the ketogenic diet began gaining popularity with people who were looking for weight loss, it must be noted that this diet was initially introduced to manage epilepsy. Research has shown that increased ketone production helps with reducing the frequency of epilepsy seizures.
MCT capric acid found in the MCT oil in keto coffee helps improve epilepsy seizure control far better than anti-epileptic medicine. However, if you are looking to switch to keto coffee and a ketogenic diet, in order to manage epilepsy, it would be advisable to consult with your doctor or seek guidance from nutrition professional.
Improves the cognitive function of the brain
Keto coffee has been linked with providing better mental clarity as well as improved cognitive function. Fat is a vital part of most physiological functions in the body. Especially so with regards to optimal functioning of the brain. Research indicates that when we consume good fat, our body and brain are able to function effectively.
Good gut health
Drinking keto coffee on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning helps you pack in a lot of energy that lasts for a large part of the day as it carries sufficient fat and calories. MCT oil in the keto coffee acts as a laxative. When it is consumed directly the MCT oil helps lubricate the digestive system and aids bowel movement. This helps maintain good gut health. Additionally, MCT oil also has antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, properties.
