A low carb bread substitute has been something many have tried to create with little success. Without gluten it can be hard to get the same texture we are used to from traditional bread.
In Australia, we can purchase Herman Brot Bread, which is a delicious alternative, but it isn’t really keto-friendly as it has wheat and soy in it. On our endless quest for a keto-friendly bread we wanted to give The Protein Bread Co Protein Bread Mix a try. Check out what we thought below.
Product – The Protein Bread Co – Protein Bread Mix
$12 for one packet of bread mix which makes 10 serves. To the mix you need to add some vinegar and 2 eggs.
Based on 1 serve of 2 slices made as per the directions on the packet –
Fat 3.3g Net Carbs 1.3g Protein 16.8g
Where do we buy?
We purchased ours from a gourmet supermarket whilst travelling in Tasmania. Their website sells them directly with free shipping. They also have other mixes including pizza, savoury muffin, sweet muffin and pancakes. You can also purchase the bread pre-made if you aren’t keen on making your own.
We love that …
The net carb count! It’s great that we can get that bread feel with only 1.3g of net carbs. Sometimes you just feel like some Vegemite on toast. We were dubious that we would get 20 slices out of the size of the loaf, but we got exactly 20.
Make sure you slice it thinly and refrigerate it before slicing, as per the instructions. The texture when toasted was nice and crunchy which was delicious. It is more firm than Herman Brot and toasts much better.

We don’t love that …
The flavour of the lupin flour is quite strong in this mix and you definitely need the condiments to assist with the flavour. One of the main ingredients is lupin flour, which comes from a legume. I am not sure the impact this may have on a keto diet, as legumes are something we would usually avoid.
I need to research Lupin flour further so I can make an informed decision around eating it. If anyone has some information please let me know in the comments.
Would we buy it again?
We would! For the carb count and the ability to get the toast crunchy we would make this again. You get 20 slices and you can store some in the freezer to make it last longer.
Note: This isn’t a paid post. This is a product we have purchased and reviewed independently.
