A Mediterranean charcuterie board is a perfect option to serve with celebratory drinks or when family and friends are coming to visit. Take all your favourite mezze items and arrange them on a charcuterie board for a delicious and unique snack or appetizer. A Mediterranean grazing board also offers more vegetarian options than a traditional charcuterie board, so is great if you are entertaining. Most items can easily be purchased from the supermarket, but arranged to make a show stopping charcuterie board!
The best ingredients for a Mezze Board
The Mediterranean regions encompasses a large number of countries from Italy and Greece to Lebanon and Morocco. Which means it covers a huge variety of cuisines, so we can really include so many items on our Mediterranean charcuterie board.
The best part is so many of these items can be purchased ready-to-eat from the supermarket, so you don’t need to spend lots of time in the kitchen. We are really just arranging the items we purchased to make a show stopping mezzo board.
Here is a list of items we love to includes on our Mediterranean charcuterie board, but of course it is just a guide. Choose your favourite items;
- hummus
- tzatziki
- baba ganoush
- grilled haloumi cheese
- olives
- roasted peppers
- sun-dried tomatoes
- falafel
- chorizo bites, salami or other charcuterie meats
- dried figs
- Turkish delight
- pita bread
- dolmades
- meatballs
- baked feta
Ideas for garnishing hummus
As we said, we love to use all store-bought items on our Mediterranean charcuterie board, including store-bought hummus. But, we do like to jazz it up a bit, not just pop the container of hummus on the platter. We like to start by spreading the hummus out on a small dish or side plate using a spatula to make it nice and smooth.
We then topped ours with some extra virgin olive oil, smoked paprika and roasted chickpeas to elevate it. Adding some garnishes to your store-bought hummus is a simple way to quickly make it more special.
Here are some ideas for levelling up your store-bought hummus;
- Extra virgin olive oil with smoked paprika and dukkah
- Roasted chickpeas or nuts
- Fresh herbs like parsley, dill or coriander (cilantro)
- Very finely chopped olives or sun-dried tomatoes
- Roasted garlic and chilli
How to assemble your Mediterranean charcuterie board
The best way to assemble your Mediterranean charcuterie board is to start with the large items like the small dishes or bowls you are using for your dips, olives and roasted veggies. It can be helpful to get all your ingredients ready and on the bench with you prior to starting to assemble your charcuterie board.
After you have decided on the layout for your plates and dishes, then fill them up. We had a small bowl with mixed olives, a small dish with roasted peppers, a side plate with hummus and another side plate with tzatziki and hummus.
Next start to to fill in some of the spaces around the plates using the smaller items like dried figs, any cured meats you are using, Turkish delight and other small items. Make sure you leave some large spaces for the grilled halloumi and pita bread to go, as these will take up more room.
It is best to add the grilled halloumi and warm pita bread just before serving so they are hot and fresh. We drizzled the grilled halloumi with some chilli honey and a sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley to serve (and it was delicious!).
