I will be the first to admit that snacking becomes less necessary when you live a ketogenic lifestyle. Keto makes you feel less hungry and snacking becomes less of a need. Even though it’s not needed on a keto diet, keto snacks are sometimes great for a treat, a good thing to get you out of a hunger emergency, or to have on hand when you have friends drop by.
Keto Snacks
The thing I love about keto snacks is that they can break up the boring regular meals. While keto definitely offers great variety over some other ways of eating, it is easy to slip into eating similar and familiar things every week. Keto snacks to the rescue here. If you are looking to add even more variety to your keto lifestyle, keto snacks give you this option.
I find keto snacks are great when you are looking for a treat. You may be going to a movie. Instead of buying the popcorn like you used you can make one of these keto snacks, like the spiced nuts, to take with you.
If you are going to a family or friends get together where you know there are going to be lots of non keto snacks and nibbles, make a couple of these keto snack options and take them with you. That way you are not tempted by the non keto options and you don’t feel like you are missing out.
We prefer keto snacks that we can make at home. The reason we like to make our own keto snacks is we can control the ingredients. We can choose the sweetener that suits us best and avoid the ones we know are not good for us.
Keto Muffins
Keto muffins are a great snack option. You can choose between a savoury option or a sweet option and you can make a batch ahead of time and store them easily in the freezer. Great for kids as a snack or to pop into your work lunch as a treat. I also like the breakfast muffin as a breakfast option, that is a lighter option than a full breakfast like bacon and eggs.
Tip – I love to eat my muffins warmed slightly, so I would pop them into the microwave for 10-15 secs. Total perfection.
Keto Fat Bombs
Keto fat bombs are probably the most popular snack in the keto world. The best thing about fat bombs as a keto snack is they are pretty difficult to overeat. The fat fills you up and you are generally only able to consume 1 in a sitting. I love the sweet ones as they offer the feeling of a sweet treat without the carbs or the overindulgence that can happen with other sweet treats. Fat bombs tend to store well in the fridge or freezer and are another great option for batch making and storing for when the sweet cravings hit.
Keto Cookies
With keto baking it can be very difficult to get a cookie with some crunch. Most of the cookies we have tried are more the soft chewy version of a cookie, the more American style. Cookies are another great keto snacks option when you are looking for some sweetness. We don’t bake them very often, as when we do they don’t tend to last long.
Keto Drinks
Bulletproof coffee was first brought to popularity by David Aspry in 2009. It gained in popularity with the ketogenic diet as replacement for breakfast. It commonly consists of a cup of coffee, some MCT oil and butter. There are now 100’s of different variations on bulletproof coffee. There are even lots of different types of bulletproof drinks that can be used as a snack or as a meal replacement to keep you full.
Lots of people will have a bulletproof drink in the morning to start their day. They find that keeps them full as well as full of energy for the rest of the day and keeps them going until dinner.
As I am not a coffee drinker I like to have a keto hot chocolate or a keto smoothie as a drink and Erika loves the keto mocha.
Entertaining Snacks
These entertaining snacks will be a life saver for you. You will want to have some of these recipes up your sleeve for when you are entertaining or going to a get together where there will be lots of snacks around. When we entertain our friends and family at our house, we keep the whole event keto, including the keto snacks we offer. We have had rave reviews about the baked camembert and the different varieties of crisps we make.
We are also not afraid to take our own keto snacks to share when attending family or friends get togethers. I will let you in on a secret, they are usually the first of the snacks to disappear off the table as they are so good.
Slices and Scones
The slices and scones are keto snacks we use for special occasions and treats. I would not be eating these snacks every day, but it would be something Erika would make for us when we are looking for a sweet treat.
My favourite special occasion sweet treat keto snack is our blondie. It has a delicious nutty and caramel flavour and is a crowd pleaser. So even our non keto friends loved this when we served it to them.
Chocolate treats
You guys know I LOVE chocolate. It is definitely my weakness. Well guess what? You don’t have to miss out on chocolate when you are living a keto lifestyle. I remember when Erika first made the chocolate bark recipe. I was immediately in love. With the chocolate, not Erika. (Well, I love her too). It was so thin and crispy and full of my favourite chocolate flavours.
