What could be more Australian than a grilled prawn on the BBQ? In summer the BBQ is a great cooking option and these keto grilled prawns are perfect for it. This meal is super delicious and super low carb, so it is a win win. We love to have this when it is way too hot to cook inside, they take only a few minutes on a hot BBQ and they are ready to serve.
Keto Prawns (Shrimp)
We have never been great at eating a lot of fish and seafood in our diet. These marinated BBQ prawns have become a regular in our meal plan now over summer. These prawns would also pair really well with this roasted capsicum and zucchini salad.
In Australia, we use the term prawns opposed to the American term shrimp. You may remember the Aussie commercial with Paul Hogan that used the slogan, ‘throw another shrimp on the barbie’. Well, in Australia you would never hear this said!
We love prawns so much here is Australia that we even serve them cold on Christmas day with a big bowl of prawn cocktail sauce.

BBQ or grilling
We really enjoy cooking a lot of our meats on the BBQ. Seafood is an excellent option to grill on the BBQ as it adds a delicious charred flavour to them. Other foods I love to grill are steaks, burgers, bacon, eggs and halloumi.
In Australia, we love to BBQ, especially in the summer. Having our friends over for a BBQ is one of our favourite ways to entertain and these keto shrimp will definitely be on the menu.
When we moved back to Newcastle in 2019, we decided we were not moving our rickety old BBQ again and we invested in a Ziegler and Brown BBQ. We wanted something smaller as we really only ever cook for the 2 of us. We got a single burner one and it suits us perfectly. I do a lot of our proteins on the BBQ. We often marinate chicken and grill it or just cook a steak on there.
Tips
- Prawns don’t take long to cook and they cook best on high heat. I like to get the BBQ nice and hot and grill only for 1-2 minutes each side.
- If you are not a big fan of heat from chillies use less and if you love heat, you might want to leave the seeds in and add an extra one.
Suggestions
- As we love to eat this mainly in Summer, we usually pair it with a keto side salad. We love this zucchini salad with this.

Keto Prawns
These keto prawns are a delicious and simple keto dinner option. You can pair them with your favourite keto side including a salad, grilled asparagus or some steamed vegies. The lemon adds a freshness and the chilli adds the perfect amount of heat. Don’t miss grilling the lemon cheeks, as you get so much juice from them.

Thanks for the recipe. Have just decided that this will be the appetizer for Christmas lunch. Hubby can cook this on the BBQ while I’m getting the main meal underway. So easy! 🙂
