Chicken would easily be our favourite protein here at Have Butter will Travel. We have always loved chicken and Erika has even started enjoying cuts other than the breast, like the thigh and wings. She still isn’t the biggest fan of the drumstick but I don’t mind as I like the drumsticks.
One of our favourite dinners, when we were early into our ketogenic lifestyle, was chicken wings and jalapeno poppers. We must have had this dinner once a week for about six months.

Chicken is generally quite a lean protein and often not a favourite choice with people living a keto lifestyle. We would recommend trying to find cuts with the skin on as that increases the fat and also adds delicious flavour to the meat.
Keto Chicken Thigh Recipes
Chicken thigh with the skin on is a great choice for the budget-conscious keto person. Thighs are generally cheaper than breasts and are easier to find with the skin on. You can get them from the deli section at most Australian supermarkets or pre-packaged in the fresh meat section.
Keto Chicken Drumsticks Recipes
Whilst drumsticks aren’t Erika’s favourite, I love them. They are also great to serve to kids as they usually love to eat them with their hands. They are a great cut for sheet pan dinners and we have made them that way a few times.
Keto Chicken Wing Recipes
As I mentioned at the start of this article, we love chicken wings and they were a staple in our keto meal plan in the first year of our ketogenic lifestyle. We have even started cooking them in the air fryer now and we love them cooked that way now.
Keto Chicken Breast Recipes
Even though chicken breast is the leanest cut of chicken, it is still one of our favourites. Erika will always choose chicken breast if she can. We both love a chicken schnitzel and there are some great keto options to make a delicious keto-friendly chicken schnitzel.
Keto Chicken Mince/Ground Chicken Recipes
Surprisingly for us, we have never been massive fans of chicken mince. Until, we got a tip from my brother, Josh. He said his wife had been making these chicken burgers that would be low carb. Erika tweaked the recipe slightly and we had one of our new favourite recipes. We absolutely LOVE these chicken burgers.
Keto Whole Chicken Recipes
We love to roast or smoke a couple of chickens and then pull the chicken off the bone. We then freeze the shredded chicken into portions to have with salad for lunches or for the protein in tacos.
Whilst making this article, I found some wonderful chicken recipes that I will be adding to my meal plan. The Mad Creations butter chicken sounds delcious, the I Breathe I’m Hungry roasted chicken and the Cafe Delites Low Carb Chicken Parmesan all sound delicious.
